Green Burials are Easy to Start

Green burial is becoming an increasingly popular choice for those who prefer to reduce their environmental impact, even after they’re gone.

What is green burial?

Although the process can vary slightly depending on your preferences and location, a green burial generally includes the use of a biodegradable container, no embalming or vaults and may even support land conservation efforts. The bottom line: green burial is a way to care for the dead with the smallest environmental impact possible, while giving them the dignity and respect they deserve.

Embalming Alternatives

Traditional embalming fluid is usually a form of formaldehyde, which can cause health risks to funeral professionals and wildlife. Many who choose green burial forgo embalming, however, there are other options that use nontoxic and biodegradable essential oils, which the Green Burial Council has approved.

Cremation

Traditional cremation uses a lot of energy, fossil fuels, and can release toxic chemicals into the air (especially when using older crematories). However, there are great strides being made in technology that allow for a more eco-friendly cremation. Scientists are turning to our planet’s most plentiful resource: water. Alkaline hydrolysis, also called “aquamation” or “bio-cremation,” is the process of using water pressure to reduce the body to ash.
